MUSHROOM STUDIO, Two Rooms

The brief asks us to design a studio for High Tea with Mrs Woo, a boutique clothing store on Darby st Newcastle and Oxford st Sydney www.highteawithmrswoo.com.au.The studio would contain Two Rooms, with very different emotive qualities and functional requirements.
The first room is designed to be light, breezy and big enough to allow the 3 sisters to individually work on their own designs. The second space is to be more intimate, a relaxation room where the girls can read, drink tea, listen to music and regain their design ideas.
The girls are young and very enthusiastic so i wanted to design something that emulated their fun personalities. When the Studio is closed the building appears as a mysterious cube placed unintentionally on site in an inner-city industrial area. The walls of the building are paneled sliding doors and clad in translucent cladding with a printed graphic (something the girls can choose to personalise "their" building). When the Studio is operational the panel doors are opened along a sliding, counterweight mechanism. The panels then form an awning and when all 4 sides are open the studio appears as a colourful mushroom, open for business.
